Red Lake is a natural dam lake on the valley of the Bicaz river, in the area of its springs, near the Bicaz Gorges. It is the youngest natural lake in Romania.
It was formed in 1837, when a portion of Mount Ghilcoş (a spur formed by rubble) collapsed and blocked the natural course of the river. The landslide was caused by excessive soaking of the vulnerable surface with water, against the background of a period of heavy rains.
